Mailei and Tre Literary Periods.

The colonial period was a more religious genre focused on daily life and politics, while the romanticism period was more emotional, imaginative, and based on individualism. The historical context of the colonial period was all about Christianity and Puritan values. The historical context of the romanticism period was about the Industrial Revolution and civil war.

The characteristics of transcendentalism are spiritualism, individualism, gothic, pain, evil, gloom, mystery, and true reality.

The historical context affects the periods by creating common general emotions and questioning towards what happening during that time.

Mailei, Cindy, Rahel's Glass Menagerie Study Guide.

1) If we were to create an autobiographical play about our family, we all agreed we would make a comedy. As characters we would use all of our family members and to represent them we would use loving, caring, welcoming, humorous, and crazy characters. We also all agreed that we would gladly share the play with our family(:
2) We believe that the title The Glass Menagerie is symbolism for protection or safe-keeping. Knowing that glass is very delicate and fragile, we guessed this because maybe Laura wants to keep her animals safe, away from harm. Glass is also see through, so while she's keeping her animals safe, she can also look at them and watch over them.
3) World War II was happening during the early 1930's. The war affected people's lives during that time because it creates fear in people and could often change social and political systems for countries (which affects everyone's daily life). It could affect the Wingfield's because maybe a family member was at war and adjusting their daily lives without them is a struggle.
4) We think that in the 1930's televisions were big, black and white, had knobs and antennas. Jim was probably thinking of improving t.v by quality wise, within the picture; either making it color or more clear. If we were to work in an industry that we think would be successful in the future, it'd be environmental friendly appliances. To make this industry greatly impact the world, it'd probably take at least 10 years.
5) For a family of 3 to live on a monthly sum of roughly around $300 would be extremely difficult. Making ends meet seem almost impossible with a pay like this one, especially if you would have to supply for others in a family.
6) Women's rights and opportunities have greatly changed since the 1930's. If she were living in today's times, she would not be as limited to jobs or things she was back then. Women nowadays aren't as limited, for most are able to equally take inititative with what they want as men.
7) To get out and explore different experiences outside of San Jose is something we would all love to pursue. Other places can bring very beneficial changes and perspectives to your life, for they make you see the world and life in new ways that you wouldn't be able to realize if you were stuck in one place for long. This is a dream for all of us and pursuing it is something we all plan on doing! &It all starts with COLLEGE (:

Mailei and Julianna's Common Theme.

The common words within our wordle were freedom, government, hope, faith, negro, white, conscience, etc. In our opinion, from these words, we believe the common theme is about human rights and history. These words are very powerful and meaningful towards the success of human nature and our society today. They all connect because they support the main theme of striving for a better country and what we've done to achieve this.

Favorite Presentation

I really enjoyed Jessika, Rachel, and Julianna's presentation. I thought that they did a good job connecting to the story and putting in their own creative spin on the project. Their keynote showed personality and the way they related to the characters was easy to understand.

As far as improvement on our keynote, I think that we could've completed the questions more thoroughly. For my question, I had a personal opinion so when it came to recording, I winged most of it. I think it would've been more complete and professional if I actually wrote things down in a paragraph.

Teenage Suicide

http://medicalcenter.osu.edu/patientcare/healthcare_services/mental_health/mental_health_about/children/suicide/Pages/index.aspx

The reason I think teens consider suicide is because when you're a teenager, you find yourself in very emotional stages. Stages of stress, happiness, angriness, and sadness. We go through tons of feelings everyday and find ourselves torn of multiple decisions. The pressures of being a teen have huge affects as well. Being a teen, we are constantly reminded of how we have so much potential and opportunity, and need to make things right because its the "time of our lives" that we can never get back. All of these things combined make us feel this need to please others and please ourselves. Feeling things like this get us overly emotional because we find ourselves hopeless, and lost. With no where to turn, because no matter what there's always something new coming up, something more for us to worry about, someone new for us to think about, or just something in general. This feeling that nothing will ever work itself out and that we always have to constantly think about something and be prepared is a lot on a young mind. The pressure seems so much at times, and it leads to wanting ways out... or in other words; death.
